Iowa Colleges: Computer Science Degrees

Computer science, or computing science, is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and their implementation and application in computer systems. As a computer science degree candidates you can use your knowledge and creativity to write new video games or websites, design computer animation, or even create original software for businesses and other organizations that tell computers what to do. For instance you could write a program that helps a business track the sales of certain types of products.

Learning computer programming will prepare you to write and design computer software as well as design programs that can perform specific tasks. In any computer programming program, you will learn various computer languages as well as software installation and maintenance. In addition you will learn about database management and computer networks, and how to ?debug? your programs, meaning that you will learn how to test them for errors before they go into use. Programs in computer science also usually require you to take several courses in computer science.

Most community colleges, technical colleges and vocational schools offer programs in computer science programming ranging from one to two years. These programs are designed to prepare you for jobs as entry-level computer programmers. It is common, however, for employers to require you to have at least a bachelor's degree in computer programming to gain entry-level positions in the field. Because of this, most two-year degrees can be transferred to four-year colleges and universities that offer bachelor's degree programs in computer science. These programs focus on programming methods for collecting, organizing, processing and disseminating information. Certificate programs in computer programming are also often available. These are usually for people who already have a bachelor's degree in a related field or who have professional computer experience. In addition, several colleges offer graduate degrees in computer science. Typically these take two to five years after you finish your bachelor's degree. Most people with graduate degrees in computer programming become high-level administrators or professors. As a graduate of one of any of these programs you will have a broad base of knowledge in computer languages that will enable you to apply in business activities.
