The job of the fashion/apparel designer is primarily concerned with conceptualizing and developing products for the apparel-related industries, together with overseeing all elements of the pre-production process. They need to be able to translate their inspirations into concrete designs, using traditional drawing techniques and computer-aided technology. In addition, they need to know all the techniques of pre-production, including draping, pattern-making, pattern grading and marker-making.

If you are interested in making a career in fashion/apparel design, you should have a strong interest in clothing and textiles and the way in which they are made. To be a successful designer, you will need to have creative flair but be able to combine this with the craft skills necessary to convert your ideas into real, live garments. For this reason, it is essential that you have the right training and education for the job. You should be able to learn all you need to know by taking courses at a college specializing in art and design, or majoring in apparel design as part of a degree program. After qualifying in this manner, you will be well prepared to take up a variety of different jobs. Fashion/apparel design covers a wide area, so as well as working as an apparel designer, you might consider taking a job as a fabric analyst, pattern designer, wardrobe supervisor, computer-aided design specialist, fashion editor, product manager or design consultant.
