Choosing a health care management degree

Career colleges require at least a bachelor's degree in health care administration. While in high school, you can prepare by taking advantage of classes such as:

  • Accounting
  • Biology
  • Business
  • Computer applications
  • Statistics

Graduates usually begin as administrative assistants or assistant department heads in larger hospitals. Of course, advancement into higher paying positions requires experience and continuing your education. Both master's and doctoral degrees in health care administration are offered by colleges, universities and career training schools of medicine, public health, public administration and business.

Courses in health administration prepare you to plan, direct and supervise health care. As an administrator, you must possess knowledge of management practices. Some health care administration training programs allow students to specialize in one type of facility such as hospitals, nursing care facilities, mental health facilities or medical groups. Graduate programs usually last between two and three years. Degree programs may include up to one year of supervised executive practice and coursework in areas such as:

  • Accounting and budgeting
  • Health information systems
  • Hospital organization and management
  • Law and ethics
  • Marketing
