Education training for counselor and psychology degree programs

Counseling and clinical psychology differ in observation perspective and training. Clinical psychologists focus on individuals with serious mental illness whereas counseling psychologists advise patients on dealing with problems associated with every day living in addition to improving their quality of life. A doctoral degree generally requires about five years of full-time graduate study. Counseling and clinical psychology degrees require a supplementary year of post-doctoral supervised experience.

Psychologists -- including clinical, counseling and school psychologists -- must follow certification or licensing requirements in all states as well the District of Columbia.
