Virginia Community Colleges, Virginia Junior College, and Virginia Technical Schools

The Virginia Community College System grew out of a master plan undertaken in the early 1960s that envisioned a statewide system of 23 regional colleges serving every part of the state. The earliest colleges were originally founded as technical colleges or branch campuses of the University of Virginia or Virginia Polytechnic Institute but were quickly brought into the new community college system. Over an eight-year period between 1966 and 1973, 23 colleges were established across the state. High school students and professionals looking to advance their careers start with Virginia's community colleges. These two-year institutions allow traditional and returning students to learn technical skills or earn credits before transferring to four-year schools. The following community colleges span the state of Virginia from the Atlantic coast to the Appalachian foothills.
