The ninth largest city in the state and the Dauphin County seat, Harrisburg bustles with nearly 50,000 residents along the Susquehanna River in south central Pennsylvania. Between river views and downtown nightlife, Harrisburg has something to offer residents from all walks of life.

Education with one of the Harrisburg colleges

Harrisburg Area Community College - Harrisburg, or HACC, serves a learning population of 23,210 students in the Harrisburg area, offering associate in arts, associate in science and associate in applied science degrees. Students can choose from nearly 100 degree paths in 20 areas of study, including art, biology, business, nursing, psychology, technology education, sociology and the performing arts. In-state tuition and fees for two-year public institutions in Pennsylvania averaged $3,663 for the 2011-12 academic year, according to The College Board. Also in the Harrisburg area, Widener University offers a master of science in nursing program for students aspiring to strong and growing careers as registered nurses. The program offers four specialties for advanced practice nurses, including family nurse practitioner and mental health clinical nurse specialist, and enrollment reached 528 for 2011-12.

A Glance at the Harrisburg economy

With such strong academic ties to nursing professions, it makes sense that registered nurses would be one of the most prevalent careers in the Harrisburg metropolitan area. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 7,050 registered nurses were employed in the Harrisburg-Carlisle region in 2011, and that registered nursing professionals enjoyed mean annual wages of $67,320 according to findings from the same report. What's more, the Dauphin County workforce of 174,309 saw an 8 percent increase in average weekly wages between September 2010 and September 2011, and the state of Pennsylvania experienced nearly a full percentage point decline in unemployment during the same period.
