Whoever says a town by a dam can't have good colleges and thriving businesses hasn't heard of Shamokin Dam, Pa. A town of more than 1,600 residents, Shamokin Dam lies in Snyder County -- a hub for academics and business.

Shamokin Dam colleges

The nearest college to Shamokin Dam is Susquehanna University, located just four miles away in Selinsgrove. A school of some 2,300 students, Susquehanna University offers undergraduate degrees in more than 50 programs of study ranging from pre-law to music. Tuition costs more than $35,000 a year, but about 95 percent of students receive institutional grants and/or scholarships. Located about 10 miles from Shamokin Dam is Lewisburg, home of Bucknell University. This college has 3,750 students and offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in over 50 majors and 65 minors, ranging from Latin American studies to anthropology. Nearly half the students study abroad at some point. Tuition costs about $45,000 a year.
