The Pennsylvania borough of Whitehall was named one of the two most livable communities in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area by PPH Technologies, a company that advises on employee relocation. As part of the Pittsburgh metro area, Whitehall is within easy commuting distance of many colleges and universities, including national research institutions like Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as the liberal arts school Washington and Jefferson College.

Founded by business titan Andrew Carnegie, Carnegie Mellon is renowned for its theatre program and its science departments. If you are interested in meeting others from around the world, know that one-fifth of its student population comes from outside the U.S. While CMU enrolls about 6,000 students, the nearby University of Pittsburgh enrolls more than 18,000. The most popular 2010 majors at Pitt included business, English and the social sciences, but the school is well-known for its medical research done through its school of medicine.

Located in the town of Washington, Pa., Washington and Jefferson College is a liberal arts school that enrolls about 1,400 students. It has been ranked No. 1 in the country per capita for producing attorneys, according to U.S. News & World Report. It's always important to know the tuition and fees at a particular college before deciding on your career education. In fact, according to The College Board, the average in-state tuition and fees for students attending public four-year schools in Pennsylvania were $12,079 and for those attending private non-profit four-year schools, $32,559.

A Look at the Whitehall, Pa. Economy

Due to its proximity to Pittsburgh, residents of Whitehall can find job opportunities in a wide variety of industries. Allegheny County has historically been well known as an industrial center, and the sector still employs more than 48,000 people locally, according to the Pennsylvania Center for Workforce Information and Analysis. U.S. Steel accounts for about 5,000 of those jobs. Health care and financial services are also top employment sectors, with major companies such as Mellon Financial and West Penn Allegheny Health System providing employment opportunities.
