Rapid City, S.D., Colleges and Universities

Rapid City, S.D. is home to more than 65,000 residents and located right in the middle of the state's famed Black Hills. The city was incorporated in 1882, and provides area attractions that are hot spots for visitors and tourists. However, the city is not without its educational resources, and it provides a variety of postsecondary choices that can fulfill a broad range of interests.

Choosing your college in Rapid City, S.D.

There are a number of options available when it comes to pursuing higher education in Rapid City. One school to consider is the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. This school offers undergraduate and graduate offerings through its 16 academic departments. The school identifies collaboration, integrity, service and respect as its core values and has a vision of becoming recognized as a world renowned technological university. National American University is another school located in Rapid City that can provide a variety of educational paths ranging from the associate degree level up through graduate degrees. The school also offer diplomas, an MBA, and training to become a nurse. Oglala Lakota College also has a branch campus located in Rapid City that serves some 450 students and offers a variety of degrees. Within the city, you can also find a number of beauty schools as well as vocational training programs.

The cost for tuition and fees will vary depending on the educational route you take. According to The School Board, tuition and fees for 2011-12 within South Dakota averaged $4,945 for a two-year public school; $6,873 for a four-year public school; and $22,926 for a four-year private school.

Career considerations in Rapid City, S.D.

Rapid City is ready for economic development. In fact, the city's Economic Development Partnership will be focusing on growing sectors in business, energy, health care, finance, metalwork manufacturing, and processed food manufacturing to bring more jobs to the area. When off the clock, workers can look to enjoy any of the sundry recreational and outdoors opportunities in the area. In fact, six national landmarks, including Mount Rushmore, are located nearby.
