College towns are a mecca for great schools and employers. And Middleton, Wis., -- a town of 17,442 people -- captures the true essence of that, being only six miles away from the ultimate college town: Madison.

Globe University has a campus in Middleton. At this campus, students can choose from more than 15 programs, ranging from a diploma in massage therapy to a bachelor's degree in accounting. Many of the programs can be completed online, and students have even more options nearby at the Madison East campus.

Just a little over a five-mile drive is the renowned University of Wisconsin-Madison. At this college, students can choose from 157 undergraduate majors, 150 master's programs, and 108 doctoral programs. The university has more than 40,000 students and is ranked in the top 50 national universities by the U.S. News & World Report. Tuition is just over $10,000 a year for in-state students and $26,000 for out-of-state students. And just like many college towns, Middleton has a highly-educated population, with over 55 percent of residents possessing a bachelor's degree. This compares with 25.8 percent as a whole for the state.

Many well-known businesses are headquartered there, such as Capital Brewery and Electronic Theatre Control. The median household income is $60,243.
