Although the "Pine Tree State" has its share of cold winters, the cold temperatures do little to diminish the raw natural beauty that typifies Maine. For such a small state, it manages to pack in an impressive number of hiking trails, camping spots, and fishing holes. Not surprisingly, many students from Maine colleges and universities double as outdoor adventurers as well. A few years at one of the state's many prestigious programs will transform you into a highly skilled backpacker in addition to whatever other disciplines you are pursuing.

Career Colleges: Maine General Studies Programs

In a general studies major you'll build a broad-based education. You won't learn the skills you'll need to do a certain job. Instead, you'll learn how to think critically, communicate effectively, and pull together knowledge from many disciplines -- skills you'll need to be successful in almost any career. However, the general studies major is more than a collection of courses chosen at random from the course catalog.

The General Studies program is an interdisciplinary program that prepares students to become effective communicators and critical thinkers who can speak, read, write and compute effectively. These skills represent those attributes essential for student academic and professional success.

The General Studies program is divided into five separate areas: English Composition, Humanities-Fine Arts, Mathematics and Sciences, History-Social-Behavioral Sciences, and Pre-professional-Majors-Elective courses. The academic breadth of the General Studies program provides a critical foundation for future academic study for each student, regardless of major. Exposure to this broad range of disciplines early in the student's academic career stimulates student interest in previously unfamiliar areas and widens their intellectual horizons.

The degree allows students to explore a wide variety of disciplines. It integrates both applied study (e.g., business, law, computer science, leadership) and arts and sciences to an extent not currently available in other degree programs. This is particularly important for adults who often interrupt their studies for prolonged periods and return with a different academic focus and career goal. The general studies degree allows nontraditional learners to continue moving forward without retracing a considerable portion of their study.

General studies degree can be the most personally rewarding degree available, precisely because it is so broad. You'll develop a basic knowledge of classical studies and study a selection of electives in the liberal arts, humanities, and sciences.
