Online Corrections and Security Degrees

Lock in your career with a corrections and security degree

As a corrections major, you will learn about prison life and correctional facilities. You also have the option of taking courses in counseling, management, and other specialization within the field. If you to choose to major as a corrections officer, you will learn how to be in charge of inmates at juvenile-detention facilities, jails and prisons.

You can also use this emphasis to learn the ins and outs of the security industry. In this industry, you can be a security guard, protecting people, property or information. This usually includes a patrolling duty and response if trouble happens.

Parole officer and probation officer training

In addition, with further classes or career training, corrections can lead to a job as a parole officer, a probation officer, or working on the administrative side of these fields. However, training at a police academy could be required.

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the jobs of correctional officers and security guards are growing as fast as the average job. The average rates for some of the jobs listed with these degrees are:

  • Bailiffs: $38,600
  • Correctional officer: $42,600
  • Correctional officer supervisor: $59,810
  • Security officer/guard: $26,400
  • Probation officer: $45,910

Places for employment

Even within these fields, salaries range depending on the company you are working for. While the federal executive branch of the government offers the highest pay in some of the fields, psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals offer the second highest pay and are more readily found in many areas. Plus, each of the jobs offer advancement with experience in the field.
