Arkansas hosts 11 four-year, public universities, including six that fall under the umbrella of the University of Arkansas System, and one in the Arkansas State University System. It also has 22 public two-year colleges, five of which are part of the University of Arkansas System and three of which are part of the Arkansas State University System. The state is also home to 12 private colleges and universities of varying sizes and specialties.

The Arkansas Department of Higher Education oversees the state's institutions of higher education and works to maximize the success of the schools and the students they serve. The mission of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education is to advocate for higher education; to promote a coordinated system of higher education in the state; and to assist each of the publicly and locally supported institutions of higher education in the state in improving the delivery of higher education services to the citizens of Arkansas.

The University of Arkansas System is comprised of six campuses and has over 42,000 enrolled students. The flagship campus in Fayetteville was founded in 1871. The Arkansas State University System is comprised of main and satellite campuses across central and northeast Arkansas.

The Arkansas State University System is consist of main and satellite campuses across central and northeast Arkansas. The system is a mixture of two and four year institutions with the primary campus being located in Jonesboro, which was founded in 1909. The system began in 1955 when Arkansas State University, Jonesboro was given control of the Arkansas State University, Beebe campus.

Henderson State University, located in Arkadelphia, promotes a liberal arts education in a small-town setting

The most popular college being the University of Arkansas and Hendrix College is the most expensive four year school in Arkansas.

The state's only medical school is the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.
