If you enjoy baking, then seek out the sweet career opportunities within the baking and pastry arts. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the food-service industry employment is expected to grow by 7 percent by 2018. While this is about average, keeping up on your baking and pastry certification could work in your favor.

Training for a baking and pastry arts degree is a cake walk

Community colleges, technical schools, culinary arts schools or two-year or four-year colleges prepare you in baking and pastry arts by stressing the importance of:

  1. Teamwork
  2. Quality control
  3. Nutrition
  4. Attention to detail
  5. Taste-testing

Pastry chefs may attend career training courses at independent cooking schools and professional culinary colleges to advance job opportunities. Accreditation by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission, or ACFEFAC, certifies more than 200 secondary baking and pastry arts degree programs around the country. In addition, the ACFEF operates several two-year or three-year hybrid apprenticeship programs that combine on-the-job training with instructional classes.

Baking and pastry professionals must possess knowledge of:

Baking and pastry arts career perspectives for the future

Although not required, certification looks good on a resume and leads to advancement and higher-paying positions. Earnings vary from region to region, usually the uppermost in world-class restaurants and hotels in metropolitan and tourist areas. In addition, earnings also vary from position to position, for example, a baker's salary can start around $17,000, whereas, according to the BLS, the annual mean salary of chefs and head cooks was $44,780.
