Watertown, S.D., home to about 20,000 people, has the academic and business culture of a larger city while still staying true to its small town charm. An education in the city could avail you to the kinds of academic opportunities you seek while preparing you for a career in this town or beyond.

Your College Education in Watertown, S.D.

The main college in Watertown is Lake Area Technical Institute. There, students can earn associate degrees, certificates and diplomas in 27 programs, ranging from cosmetology to entrepreneurship. LATI has more than 1,500 students and has been ranked in the top five community colleges in America by Aspen Institute. Tuition ranges from $3,000 to $5,000 a year, depending on the program. Mount Marty College is a private school with a small campus location in Watertown. This campus, home to about 300 students, provides undergraduate offerings while the main campus, nearly three hours away in Yankton, offers both undergraduate and graduate-level pursuits.

Another college to consider is that of South Dakota State University, located about an hour south of Watertown in Brookings. The largest university in the state, it offers both undergraduate and graduate classes in some 175 fields of study. Tuition and fees for college in the state vary. According to The College Board, the average in-state cost for two-year public schools in 2011-12 was $4,945; for four-year public schools, $6,873; and for private nonprofit four-year schools, $22,926.

A look at the Watertown Economy

Recent graduates of colleges in Watertown could look for jobs within the main industries in the city that include education, health care and manufacturing. Additionally, the top five employers in town are the Watertown School District, Angus Palm, Terex Utilities, Prairie Lakes Hospital, and Premier BankCard.
