Indiana higher education

Colleges in the Indiana higher education system are affordable, especially for in-state residents. Tuition starts around $4,500 per year at regional colleges, although other schools, like private Notre Dame, can reach more than $40,000 per year. The student population attending Indiana colleges and universities varies from nearly 500 to more than 40,000. Indiana colleges and universities provide an opportunity to meet other students and to be involved in groups or clubs of interest, such as charity fundraisers, sororities and fraternities, student government and athletics.

Some of the leading universities and colleges in Indiana include these four

  1. University of Norte Dame, which has strong biochemistry and chemistry programs
  2. Purdue University, which boasts the revered School of Aeronautics and Astronautics
  3. Indiana University, which has a renown arts and science programs
  4. Ball State University, which promotes a highly rated entrepreneurship program
  5. Indiana Wesleyan University

Purdue University in West Lafayette and Indiana University made the cut on ""U.S. News and World Report"" magazine's list of nationally ranked universities.

Ivy Tech Community College trains students in massage therapy, nursing, machine tool technology, accounting and more, providing graduates with career development and advising. Indiana technical and vocational schools differ from technology colleges to art institutes and focus mainly on career and trade degree programs.

After graduation from Indiana colleges, universities and trade schools

In 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau reported the median household income in Indiana as $45,427. Management, Health Care Practitioners and Technicians, Legal, Computer and Mathematical occupations are the highest paying industries in Indiana, as listed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2010.

Home health aides showed a staggering 52 percent growth in occupational projections through 2018. Those careers that follow close behind are these five:

  1. Network systems and data communications analysts
  2. Athletic trainers
  3. Financial examiners
  4. Personal and home care aides
  5. Skin care specialists

Among the 10 largest employers in Indiana are Purdue University, Indiana University Bloomington, and Indiana University-Purdue University.

Several health care organizations make that top 10 list, including: St Vincent Hospital & Health, Clarian Health Partners Inc., Eli Lilly & Co., Deaconess Hospital Inc. and Peyton Manning Children's Hospital.

Indiana: beyond the books

Indiana's capital city Indianapolis attracts hundreds of thousands of fans for the Indy 500 and the Brickyard 400. Indianapolis is also home to notable art museums and galleries, restaurants and clubs. Other metropolis areas include Fort Wayne, Terra Haute, Jeffersonville and Evansville.

A city with a small-town feel, Bloomington is advantageous for students enrolled in Indiana trade schools to study the city's fine art, architecture and justice system. Attracting outdoor and recreation enthusiasts, Indiana's countryside ranges from the beaches of Lake Michigan to a skier's winter wonderland.
