Teachers help educate the next generation

Educating the next generation is a privilege, but also a tremendous responsibility. Teachers must have the tools they need to impart knowledge. Where can one obtain those tools? At colleges and universities that offer secondary education programs and elementary education degrees.

Teachers in the U.S. public school systems must graduate from a four-year college with a bachelor's degree in education or a specialty field, such as English, Science or Math, and obtain a state license. Many states offer accelerated licensing programs for professionals who hold bachelor's degrees in fields other than education who want to teach. Private schools often have more flexible hiring requirements.

Degree programs for teachers

Most elementary and secondary education colleges offer a variety of major and minor degree programs within their bachelor's degree programs in education, including elementary, middle and high school education. Some colleges also offer special content areas, such as special education, technology, literacy, multicultural studies and music. Education degrees typically include the following classes:

  1. Educational psychology
  2. Human behavior and development
  3. Measurements and evaluation
  4. Student teaching
  5. Valuing cultural diversity

At some universities, students can further specialize in math, science, statistics and other areas.
