Bridgeport, W. Va. Colleges and Universities

Bridgeport, W. Va. is known for more than just its 100-store mall. This town of 8,149 people also has a lot to offer when it comes to education as well as business.

Bridgeport colleges

West Virginia Junior College has a campus in Bridgeport. At this campus, students can earn associate degrees in areas like medical assisting, network and software solutions, medical office administration, business administration, dental assisting, pharmacy teching, and medical coding as well as a diploma program in office applications. Only 20 miles down the road is Fairmont State University. A school of 4,600 students, FSU offers more than 90 undergraduate degrees and four graduate degrees. The school offers seven varsity sports and has more than 85 student clubs.

Just a half-hour drive away is West Virginia University, in Morgantown. A school of nearly 30,000 students, WVU offers some 200 programs at all degree levels. The college has more than 300 clubs and leaves the average student with only about $9,800 of debt. Since nearly 40 percent of Bridgeport's residents have college degrees, this small town has not only an educated workforce but an intellectual vibe in the air.

Bridgeport economy

The main industries in Bridgeport are education and health care, which comprise 17 percent of the workforce. The science and waste management industries also have a large presence there. The median household income is $66,318. There's no sign of this small town slowing down anytime soon. The population grew 11.5 percent between 2000 and 2010, proving that you don't have to be big to provide a solid quality of life.
