Charleston, W. Va. Colleges and Universities

Charleston, W. Va. has all the components of a fun city: museums, parks and restaurants. But this city of 51,400 people rises above pure leisure by also being a great place to work and go to school.

Charleston colleges

The main college in Charleston is the University of Charleston. This private school has 1,339 students and is ranked by the Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report. Students can choose from several undergraduate and graduate programs, ranging from an associate degree in nursing to a master's degree in business. West Virginia Junior College also has a campus in Charleston. There, students can earn associate degrees in medical assisting, network and software solutions, medical office administration, business administration, legal office assistant, and dental assistant. Students can also earn a diploma in office applications.

Within an hour drive of Charleston are colleges such as West Virginia State University and Mountain State University. With nearly 40 percent of residents holding bachelor's degrees, it's evident they are taking advantage of their academic surroundings. That compares with 17.3 percent for the state as a whole, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The main industries in Charleston are education and health care, which comprise 24.6 percent of the workforce. Many notable companies have headquarters there, such as Appalachian Power and Tudor's Biscuit World. Some industries in Charleston grew during 2011, some as high as five percent.
