Salem, W. Va., Colleges and Universities

Salem, W. Va., wins the hearts of many with its Apple Butter Festival -- a festival dedicated to the making and judging of apple butter. This town of 24,802 has many charms like this as well as an admirable education and business scene.

Salem colleges

Salem International University is based in Salem. The college offers a number of certificates, associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees ranging in choice from a licensed practical nursing certificate to a master's degrees in business administration. SIU also offers several classes online and tuition at about $11,000 a year.

Drive 25 miles and you'll reach Fairmont State University. A college of approximately 4,600 students, FSU offers more than 90 bachelor's degree programs and four graduate degree programs in subjects as varied as business and education. Tuition is just more than $5,300 for in-state students and $11,000 for out-of-state students. Within an hour drive of Salem are many other colleges and universities, such as West Virginia University and West Liberty University. Perhaps this explains why 30 percent of the population living in Salem has bachelor's degrees.

Salem economy

Salem has quite the retail presence with more than 2,100 firms located in the city. Salem also soars above the rest of the state in retail sales per capita, raking nearly twice the average amount in other towns. The median annual household income was $48,828.
