What does an interior design profession involve?

Interior designers do much more than arrange furniture. These specialized designers can be found at every step of the space design process, working with lighting, textures, colors and artwork in new and existing locations. From airports to libraries, private houses to public spaces, interior designers work to make any interior functional, beautiful and safe.

What can I learn at interior design schools?

A bachelor's degree is the standard requirement for most interior design jobs, though an associate degree may be acceptable for some entry level positions. Interior design programs typically feature instruction in the following:

  • Drafting and electronic scales
  • Computer aided design software, such as Autodesk AutoCAD, Graphisoft and ArchiCAD
  • Graphical and editing software, like Adobe Illustrator and AutoDesSys Form Z
  • Video creation and editing software with Autodesk 3ds Max

While interior designers rely on a natural eye for aesthetics, the career has a decidedly technical side, as well.

What careers can top interior design schools prepare me for?

Entry-level jobs in interior design are often found in specialized design firms. More experienced designers may advance to become chief designers or design department heads. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2010, interior designers earned mean annual wages of $52,100. Those working for architectural and engineering firms earned $56,520 that same year. Moderate growth is projected within the interior design field, with 13,900 new jobs estimated to become available between 2008 and 2018.
