Transportation and trucking training and programs

Transportation degrees or truck driver training can lead to a multitude of career options. With the skills you learn through transportation courses, you can coordinate, direct, or plan transportation, learn to drive different classes of trucks, and learn truck capacities and safety regulations and about the law requirements for different trucks.

Truck driving training

You can obtain truck driving training through the National Safety Council, which offers a variety of online and in-person courses to help you obtain your license to become a professional truck driver. In additional to the National Safety Council, there are other programs that teach you how to be a heavy and tractor-trailer driver as well.

So if you are interested in driving the larger tractor-trailer trucks you can go to CDL training, and you will learn the necessary skills to acquire a job in the field. These skills will teach you how to:

  • Check the mechanical, safety and emergency equipment on the truck
  • Maintain logs, and follow state and federal regulations
  • Secure cargo for transport and how to use weigh stations
  • Obtain proper signatures or receipts for delivery
  • Inspect goods and inventory
  • Maneuver, load, and unload safely

These skills will help you ensure you get the job you want, and be able to handle multiple situations.

The trucking industry

The industry can include training or courses for multiple types of trucks. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the outlook is good for the future of truck driving. Some of these careers include:

  • Truck driver and sales workers: earnings of $15.82 average per hour
  • Tractor-trailer driver: earnings of $22.56 average per hour
  • Delivery service truck driver: earnings of $17.74 per hour

Jobs in the industry vary by location, and may offer higher pay rates in certain locations as well.
