Portsmouth, Ohio Colleges and Universities

Situated just north of the northern border of Kentucky, Portsmouth, Ohio bills itself as the place "where southern hospitality begins." From the Portsmouth Community Orchestra to the Boneyfiddle Historical District, Portsmouth has no shortage of attractions for students and residents.

Portsmouth Colleges

Located just up the road in New Boston, Daymar College offers career-oriented education for students in the Portsmouth area. With a relatively small student body of about 200 learners, Daymar College provides personalized instruction in six high-value job fields, including criminal justice, business management and medical assisting. As a private institution, Daymar College charges tuition rates that run higher than the statewide average of $3,608 for public two-year colleges.

Shawnee State University also educates area students at its campus on the banks of the Ohio River, offering two- and four-year degrees in multiple disciplines of the sciences and the arts. Students at Shawnee State can choose between 40 bachelor's and 30 associate degree programs as well as pursue a bachelor of fine arts degree in one of eight specific areas. Average tuition rates for the 4,477 students enrolled for the 2011-12 academic year came in several hundred dollars under the statewide four-year public college tuition and fees average of $8,904.

Portsmouth Economy

Portsmouth is the seat of Scioto County, where the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 2.5 percent rise in average weekly wages between September 2010 and September 2011. Office and administrative support jobs make up the largest percentage of the workforce in the Portsmouth region, totaling about 14 percent of workers. Residents of the Portsmouth metropolitan area earned an average annual wage of $36,470 in 2011, and the 9 percent of workers who were employed in the education, training and library sector enjoyed an average annual salary of $50,230.
