Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks' Mississippi Museum of Natural Science was adopted in 1974 as the State Natural Science Museum. It is to promote understanding and appreciation of Mississippi's biological diversity through collections, research, scientific data bases, education, and exhibits; and to inspire the people of our state to respect the environment and to preserve natural Mississippi.

Mississippi Museum of Natural Science

The Museum of Natural Science is responsible for studying, preserving, and enhancing Mississippi's living natural resources. A professional staff of almost three dozen people includes ten research biologists who are chiefly concerned with protecting our state's rare and endangered species. The staff also administers federal research and education grants and maintains the Mississippi Natural Heritage Database, a computerized information bank containing some 5,000 individual files.

The law designating The Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks' Mississippi Museum of Natural Science as the official Mississippi state natural science museum is found in the Mississippi Code, Title 49, Chapter 1, Section 49-1-55.

§ 49-1-55. Natural Science Museum


(1) The Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks' Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is hereby designated as Mississippi's official State Natural Science Museum.

The museum will henceforth be named "Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, The Fannye A. Cook Memorial, a Division of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks."

(2) The Legislature shall annually appropriate from the General Fund a sum to defray not less than one hundred percent (100%) of the expenses of the museum.
