Pottsville, Pa., Colleges and Universities

The city of Pottsville, Pa., with a population just over 14,000, has a history dating back to the early 1800s and one founded on coal. While the city still has this industry as a major part of its economy, the area offers much more to residents interested in everything from education to the outdoors. In fact, Schuylkill County, in which Pottsville is located, is home to three state parks, the Little Schuylkill River, and has the Appalachian Trail pass through.

Colleges and Universities in Pottsville, Pa.

Penn State Schuylkill in Schuylkill Haven, about five miles from Pottsville, is a branch of Penn State University that offers five bachelor's degree programs: administration of justice, business, information sciences and technology, psychology, and an RN to BS for registered nurses. The 70-acre branch has an enrollment over 1,000 and offers 30-plus student organizations.

The Schuylkill School of Nursing in Pottsville offers a three-year diploma program that includes two years of nursing courses and well as a final year of pre-req coursework useful for admittance to a university. Additionally, there is the McCann School of Business and Technology, which is one of six Pennsylvania campuses located statewide. Certificate and associate degree programs are available at the campus sites; in fact, the Pottsville campus recently added an associate degree in electrical systems as one of its offerings. The average cost to attend a two-year public institution in Pennsylvania 2011-12 is $3,663; a four-year public institution, $12,079; and for a four-year private school, $32,559, according to The College Board.

Thinking about a career in Pottsville

As a graduate of one of the colleges and universities in or nearby Pottsville, you can find a variety of career opportunities. North of Pottsville is Highridge, one of a dozen industrial parks located in Schuylkill County; This park houses a Lowe's distribution center estimated to employ more than 600 people. Additionally, a business incubator is planned in Pottsville to support new business. This should provide low cost space, needed support and other assistance to new start-ups in the area, according to The City of Pottsville website.
